"A beginning": the blacksmiths in the picture, I believe, were on the original site of the Mechanics Institute/School aeons ago. To obtain corroboration, if you want, I suggest you contact Iain Dewhirst who used to be the librarian (Reference section) at Keighley Library and is the acknowledged expert on all local issues of the past - still lives in Keighley with parents I'm fairly certain.

Picture of Bill Midgley: Attended the school as a pupil at the outbreak of WW1 and had an association for 50+ years. Raised the profile of 'The Benual', growing into the Technical Studies Dept. offering 'A' levels in wood/metal work and tech. drawing. Member of Longsdon House and was Senior House Master. Heavily involved in many aspects of the School and extra-curricular: NUT, ATC cricket, scouts and the infamous summer camp at Kirkcudbright. He looks so angelic on that retirement photo doesn't he but there was another side to his nature especially if you were crap at any of his chosen disciplines or you attempted to misbehave in one of his 'master classes'.

Arthur Watthey: Headmaster who I endured for French Literature at 'A' level as I missed out on Fred Catley by a year or so.
