Oakbank School is a 13-18 high school situated on the outskirts of Keighley and within the metropolitan authority of Bradford. Most pupils come from the town with the remainder coming from the adjacent rural area. Just over a third of the pupils come from areas that are economically disadvantaged. Unemployment in the locality is above the national average. In Year 9, pupils are drawn largely from 4 contributory middle schools. About 10% of its intake are pupils of minority ethnic origin. The pupil intake includes the full ability range but a significant proportion attain standards in reading which are below average. Statements of special educational needs are maintained in respect of 30 pupils; 2.5% of the school population, which is above average for maintained secondary schools in metropolitan authorities. The percentage of pupils eligible for free school meals is 21.4% which is close to the average for secondary schools in metropolitan authorities. In 1995, 46% of pupils stayed in full-time education after the age of 16 and 57% of Year 13 students went on to higher education.
